Super Mario Galaxy

Nintendo Nov 12, 2007 »

The stellar presentation and fantastic level designs combine to make Super Mario Galaxy the Wii's game to beat and one of Mario's greatest adventures yet.

The Good
Some of the best level designs of any 3D platformer
Beautiful, colorful graphics
Controls work just about flawlessly in nearly every situation
Soundtrack is a delight
Lots of stages and tons of stars to find and collect.

The Bad
A couple of Mario's special suits can be frustrating to use
Minimal amount of story doesn't tie everything together especially well.

No More Heroes

Ubisoft, Grasshopper Jan 22, 2008 »

This is the mature Wii action title you've been waiting for, and there's nothing else quite like it.

The Good

Joyous, stylized action that's as awesome to perform as it is to watch
Terrific use of motion controls
High-concept story and bizarre characters deliver plenty of drama and mature humor
Lots of small details and gameplay detours to keep you engaged.

The Bad
Frame rate gets erratic
Side missions are too short.

Mercury Meltdown Revolution

Ignition Entertainment Oct 15, 2007 »

The PSP puzzler finds a natural home on Nintendo's console, where the Wii Remote finally gives you much-needed tilt control.

Even since its starting point on the PSP, Mercury was always meant to be played with tilt control. Deep in the vaults at developer Ignition Entertainment lay a motion-sensitive adaptor for the console that never saw the light of day. So when Nintendo revealed that the Wii would offer a controller with such a feature, a conversion for the console was pretty much assured. While Mercury Meltdown Revolution is effectively the PSP game with a few new levels, the implementation of the Wii Remote is faultless, refining the experience and making it more enjoyable than before. What's more, it's a game with immense longevity, and if you're a fan of puzzle games, you shouldn't miss out.

Guitar Hero III Legends of Rock - Wii

RedOctane, Activision, Vicarious Visions Oct 28, 2007 »

Guitar Hero III ups the ante with more challenge and new modes, and though not all the new stuff is great, the terrific tracklist and gameplay are sure to hook you in.

The Good
The best tracklist of any Guitar Hero game to date
Lots of master tracks from the original bands and artists
Online play is a fantastic addition
Higher difficulty level ensures experienced players won't get bored quickly.

The Bad
Higher difficulty level ensures most people's arms will fall off halfway through the expert career
Battle mode and boss battles aren't interesting additions
A heavy dose of in-game advertising.

The Good
Fantastic environmental puzzles are among the best of the series
Great boss fights require you to use every game mechanic at your disposal
Atmospheric levels are a pleasure to explore
Various gameplay elements mesh nicely into a seamless whole.

The Bad

Nintendo, Treasure Oct 1, 2007 »

Sin and Punishment is a unique shooter loaded with giant bosses and sweeping set-piece battles.

Great mix of shooting and character-focused action
Set-piece battles show that the N64 wasn't as weak as everyone thought
Finally, people in the West get to play this formerly Japanese-exclusive game.

The Bad

You can breeze through in about an hour if you don't care about scores or continues
The 1,200 points cost seems dubious considering the Japanese version was already in English.
